1976 912E

My late father was the third owner of this car, purchased in 1990. I assumed ownership in 2002, and I’ve come to identify with this car, named Sienna, in a very significant way. This car is by no means perfect. Like many cars, it is loved, hated, respected, criticized, questioned, and appreciated all at the same time. Anyone with minimal 912E knowledge will know that it was a one year only model, is appreciated by a select number of people, and is perceived by most as an underpowered pretender unworthy of the marque. My claim here is that perception is not always reality. Despite all of its visible defects, Sienna has never left me stranded and almost always leaves me satisfied and with a grin on my face. The engineering and motorsport pedigree are evident. What it lacks in horsepower, is more than offset by the powertrain and chassis dynamics that provide a distinct level of engaging feedback, and a pure and unique driving experience. So, slow car fast. But, subjectively, can there be a car with a combination of old age, dubious collectibility, below-average performance, and flawed appearance: imperfect car perfect?
